Gebe Martinez

Biography of Gebe Martinez, Founder of GM Networking, a strategic communications firm that intersects politics, policy and media.

As political and policy analyst, strategic communications advisor and former political journalist. Gebe Martinez brings to the communications profession an extensive background on Capitol Hill and at policy and political planning tables in Washington, D.C., and work with local and national news media.

A Texas native, Ms. Martinez’s background includes 33 years as a journalist for news organizations such as Los Angeles Times, Politico and Congressional Quarterly. She also served as a news analyst on public affairs programs for networks including PBS, NPR, BBC television and radio.

Ms. Martinez entered the issue advocacy arena as a senior writer and immigration policy analyst for the Center for American Progress. During the 2012 U.S. presidential election season, which resulted in a record 12.5 million Latinos casting ballots, she worked with Service Employees International Union Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina on the Latino voter engagement campaign and coordinated media strategies with other organizations.

GM Networking was founded in early 2013 and has worked with numerous clients, including, America's Voice, For Our Future, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, League of United Latin American Citizens, Mi Familia Vota, National Immigration Law Center, National Immigrant Justice Center, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, Mi Familia Vota, Voto Latino and others to promote commonsense immigration reform legislation, the DREAM Act, develop immigration score cards to rate Congress' behavior on immigration reform, and advance civic engagement, voter registration and voter turnout.

During the 2016 election cycle, she worked with actor Diane Guerrero and national civic engagement groups to promote citizenship, voter registration and voting by Latino and millennial voters, and included outreach to English and Spanish language media organizations. Ms. Martinez also helped promote Ms. Guerrero's memoir, "In The Country We Love," which heartbreakingly details the impact of the U.S. immigration system on citizen children.

Ms. Martinez also works with actor Jackie Cruz on social justice issues including the rights of Latinas. In the Fall, 2008, staged a library exhibit and video documentary related to ongoing book project about her grandmother, a native of San Luis Potosi, SLP, Mexico, who became a certified midwife in Texas at the start of the Great Depression. The story is included in the Emmy award-winning PBS documentary series, “Children of the Revolución.”

Ms. Martinez is a member of the boards of the Women's Foreign Policy Group and Rewire.
